Melt 2018

20,000 festival-goers from all across the globe turned Melt Festival into a melting pot of unlimited freedom and love

In the early hours of July 16, 2018, Melt Festival’s 21st edition came to a close in Ferropolis. With exclusive performances by The xx, Florence + The Machine, Fever Ray, Tyler, The Creator and many more as well as 20,000 festival-goers from all across the globe, the festival, once more, lived up to its reputation, breaking with expectations and presenting a lineup beyond genres and borders.

When Florence Welch, frontwoman of Florence + The Machine, raised the rainbow flag on our new main stage Friday night and thousands of Melt-goers from all over the world enthusiastically sang along to “You’ve Got The Love” and “Dog Days Are Over”, it set the scene for the entire festival weekend. Fans had to wait almost five years for the band to reemerge with new material. It’s not surprising that when the band took the stage showcasing brand-new material for the first time, their Germany exclusive gig turned into nothing short of a volcano eruption of emotions.

In its 21st year, Melt Festival, once again, sent out an invitation to leave behind the daily grind, and festival-goers from across 50 nations transformed the unique festival site at Lake Gremmin into a massive adventure playground – far away from societal conventions and limits. Apart from Florence + The Machine, The xx also made sure of that. Hardly any contemporary band embodies the attitude of an entire generation like the London-based trio. So, it’s more than fitting that The xx played their only Germany show this year at Melt.

Altogether, Melt Festival aimed at presenting the freshest and most diverse lineup of the entire festival season. Fever RayTyler, The Creator, Nina KravizMura MasaOdeszaJon Hopkins (live)Cigarettes After SexBadbadnotgoodThe InternetLittle Dragon and Alma made sure of that.

Of course, Melt is and always has been a platform for the latest up-and-comers. This year, Princess NokiaMoses SumneySevdalizaIAMDBBRex Orange CountySuperorganismThe BlazeGeorge Fitzgerald and Zhu were amongst the most promising acts you will most certainly hear a lot more from in the future.

Only at Melt does a primetime drag show on the main stage turn into the talk of the festival. Berlin’s drag queen Pansy and her collective brought plenty of ‘pussy power’ to the City of Iron.

With splendid weather throughout, the festival grounds boasted diverse programming that included mini raves in the shadowy forest, Q&A sessions with artists between forest clearings, chilling in hammocks and plenty of refreshing dives into the crystal clear waters of Lake Gremmin: a medley of unlimited possibilities – not forgetting the morning beer yoga at the “musikdurstig Stage” of our partner Warsteiner.

This year’s art programme curated by Tobias Staab was more extensive than ever. Festival-goers were invited to check out installations by light and video artists Ulf Langheinrich and Pollyester at the Art Forum and the Art Space throughout the entire weekend.

The secret star of this year’s edition: the Forest with electronic delights, adventure and chill-out areas aplenty – and secrets, because what happens at Melt stays at Melt.

A big thank you goes out to all festival-goers and friends, partners, reporters, the entire Melt crew and all volunteers for creating this amazing festival experience together. You all turned this event into a sparkling extravaganza unique on the European festival circuit.

The 2019 edition of Melt from July 19-21 is already under way. Pre-sale begins September 1, 2018.
